Costumes and traditions Connecting Europe and Africa, the Orient and the Occident, Tunisia inherited rich and complex traditions as it could be demonstrated by the various traditional costumes. Men, in towns and villages, often wear the jebba, a loose tunic, the burnous made of camel hair or the chechia, a red-felt cap emblematic of national costumes. In the South, nomads are donned with houli and wear the cheche around their face to protect it from the sand. Countryside women wear red pleated dress, the melia, whereas urban women still wear the silk-white safsari. Yet, the most beautiful costume is that of wedding ceremonies, and which differs from one city to another: dressed like antique idols, the brides wear boleros and serouels (trousers) covered with sparkling spangles, golden tunics or gorgeous cardigans embellished with broidered arabesques. Ways of life, creeds and rituals also stand for a rich heritage, ranging from the splendid medina dwellings, provided with awesome patios surrounded by arcades, to the Berber troglodyte houses of the Great south, via the ceremonies of religions denominations and the magnificent Bedouin marriage ceremonies.
