Founded by the Phenicians in 814 BC, Carthage has yielded a civilization, that is half-Oriental and half African, to which the Romans gave the name of Punic. After having combined several Phenician conterds, all around the Mediterranean rim, in a vast and rich empire, Carthage became one of the most powerful cities of the antique Mediterranean sea. Its civilization had prevailed for more than a millennium before it was obliterated by Rome.
Some rare, but highly significant, monuments still exist to revive this immortal civilization : comfortable and refined dwellings, statues and sacrophaguses reminiscent of the Oriental cultures, masks, along with jewels and amulettes loaded with lofty symbols…
