During the evening of December 3rd, 2003, Shanghai, economic capital of China, was selected to host Shanghai 2010 Universal Expo. The other city candidates were Yeosu (South Korea ud), Moscow (Russia), Queretaro (Mexico) and Wroclaw (Poland).
On that evening, the big dream of the Chinese city, Pear of the Orient, became true. People from China, and notably from Shanghai, are the happiest people on earth. They promised to hold an Expo that would be successful, splendid and unforgettable in 2010. The Universal Expo is a good opportunity for participants to exchange their assets in the economic, social, cultural and scientific fields. This the first time that this event is being held in a developing country, thus opening a new chapter in the history of this Expo which dates back to more than 150 years. This is also the second piece of good news for China, after its qualification, last Summer, for the Olympic games of 2008. The Universal Expo “economic Olympiads” will give more momentum to the development process in China.
Therefore, it seems quite reasonable, for foreign countries, to address this future giant and express their amazement : after the WTO and the Olympic Games of 2008, the cross years of China-France and the high profile acquired at the world fora like the UN ; ASEM, APEC, ASEAN, this 21st century seems to belong to China by all global standards. Upon the announcement of the verdict, the mayor of Shanghai gave the following promise: “We will not fail to honor all our commitments. This event will be the most unforgettable and the most remarkable”. China has earmarked an amount of 100 million dollars for this universal event. Shangai 2010 Universal Expo will be held from May 1st to 31st October 2010. The topic will be “Better city, better life. Here is the list of the countries participating at the next 2010 Universal Expo (as November 2007): 180 countries will be taking part at the Shanghai Universal expo: (in parentheses the capitals of these countries):
