2010 Universal expo: international pavilions

Universal exhibits offer good opportunities for human inspiration and thinking. Since the first Universal expo, held in London, in 1815, this event has represented an important platform, for all stakeholders, to exchange viewpoints in the economic, scientific, technological and cultural fields.

Under the topic of  « Better city, better life», Shanghai  2010 Universal Expo  will be an excellent opportunity to discover the urban life in the 21st century. By the advent of 2010, 55% of the world population will be living in urban areas. All nations take interest in the global aspects of future urban life.
Being the first Universal Expo to focus on the topic of the city, Shanghai 2010 is a good opportunity for the participating countries to exchange experiences, in terms of urban development, tap new approaches, relative to urban habitat and sustainable development.

Here is an overview of the various projects provided for in Shanghai 2010 Universal Expo. .

France pavilion
Architect : Jacques Ferrier

The French pavilion will put on display the balance between « technicity » and « sensuality » and « creation » and « permanence » and « innovation » and « quality » and « action » and « thinking » and « city » and « territory ». This idea of  creative and dynamic balance will delete the opposition between « traditional and modern France » that could be raised at any given time.

Pavilion of Finland
Architect : JKMM architects

The architects of JKMM architects have decided to be inspired from the « Kirnu » natural formula - meaning a Giant sauce pan in Finnish – a rocky cave, made naturally along the coastlines, to design the Finnish pavilion for Shanghai 2010 Universal Expo. The aim of the pavilion sculpture architecture is to set visions of freedom, creativity and innovation for the future. Rising up from water, the building will be reflecting, with its different materials, the mineral, vegetal and aquatic elements of the Finnish coastline islands. Its structure will be made of steel and wood, along with a bardeau covered up with fish scales world and made up of recycled paper and plastic. ,


Pavilion of Italy
Architect : Giampaolo Imbrighi

The Italian pavilion of Italy will be situated within the Universal expo premises. The selected design, the only one among the 65 candidates, is called « the city of humanity ». The pavilion will consist of 20 modules representing the 20 Italian regions. From outside, the Italian pavilion will look like a heterogeneous mosaic representing the homogeneous relations among various cultures. When visitors take a walk there, they feel a mixture of Shikumen streets (traditional habitat of Shanghai) and the Italian landscape.


Pavilion of Denmark
Architecte: BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group)

the topic of the Danish pavilion is « happy life, magic eldorado ». Reports have it that design of the Danish pavilion is inspired from the Nanpu bridge in Shanghai. The pavilion is divided into two circular trajectories, offering an internal and an external sides, and these sides are connected by a coherent platform. Inside the pavilion, we could find various exhibits such the basin of salt water, one hundred bicycles, to be used by visitors, as well the famous statue of the Small nymph.


Swiss pavilion
Architect : Buchner Brundler Architekten

Seen from above, the premises of the Swiss pavilion is reminiscent f the future world. Covering a total area of 4000 m2, i twill be covered with sweet dreams about the future. Its major target is sustainable development which reflects the innovative combination of natural elements and high-tech. It is open areas with soja-fiber curtains, to generate electricity and decrease naturally. This design highlights the contrast as conveyed by the Chinese philosophy, Yin and Yang.
