Kairouan, Capital of Islamic 2009
Kairouan was chosen as a capital for Islamic culture following a decision taken by the plenary conference of the Culture minsiters ISESCO member states, held in 2004 in Algiers, within the farmework of the organization program aimed at popularizing the culture and civilization contribution of the cities having played a major role for the dissemination of the Islamic civilization and values. In compliance wiht adrress given by President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali on the occasion marking the 21st anniversary of the Change, concerning the triggering of this program, the city of Kairouan will have the privilege to host this great event where all literary, cultural, artistic, intellectual and scientific aspects will come into play.
A large number of national and international stakeholders have been involved in the drawing up of this program, i.e. the IOC, under the aegis of which this event will be held, in addition to the contribution of many ministries, institutions and brotherly and friendly countries who have provided their invaluable support. The scholars and regional senior executives, in the city of Kairouan, have brought their contribution to the devising of this program. The celebrations will start in early March 2009 and will continue until the end of the year, in form of varied programs consisting of academic and artistic events, in addition to festivals, exhibits, shows and workshops. All these Tunisian and foreign events cover a wide range of creative activities, and notably those highlighting the civilization of Kairouan and the Islamic World.
